Linode was founded in 2003 as a developer-focused Linux VPS provider and built a loyal following over two decades with a simple promise: honest pricing, solid hardware and documentation that actually helps you. In 2022, Akamai Technologies acquired Linode, folding its compute platform into what is now marketed as Akamai Connected Cloud — while retaining the Linode name for much of the developer-facing product. For our 2026 review we evaluated the platform based on third-party performance benchmarks, transparent pricing analysis (there is no shared-hosting-style intro/renewal structure here), reliability SLAs, support channels, and the overall value proposition versus the developer-VPS peer set of DigitalOcean, Vultr and Hetzner. Some figures below draw on public data and third-party testing rather than our own hardware, and we say so where that is the case.
Linode's core appeal is predictability. The entry Nanode 1 GB costs a flat $5/mo (or ~$0.0075/hour), with 1 GB RAM, 25 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer and 40 Gbps networking — and the pricing page does not hide renewal jumps behind an intro discount. That transparency extends to networking: included transfer is pooled across your account, and overage runs just $0.005/GB, a fraction of the egress fees charged by many larger clouds. Combined with a 99.99% compute SLA and free DDoS protection on Akamai's backbone, Linode is one of the most cost-predictable developer clouds you can run a business on. The catch is ownership: this is an unmanaged platform, so patching, backups, hardening and monitoring are on you unless you buy the managed add-on.
Performance and reliability
Linode's network performance is a differentiator, especially post-acquisition: instances sit adjacent to Akamai's massive CDN/edge footprint, which keeps inter-region latency low and benefits from mature DDoS mitigation. On the compute side, third-party trials tell a more measured story. In VPSBenchmarks testing during 2024–2025, Linode's Shared CPU plans (Nanode 1 GB through Shared 4 GB / 16 GB) recorded mid-pack scores in the ~48–76 range depending on the plan and test run — solid and consistent, but not the raw price-per-core leader that Hetzner claims on EU hardware. Where Linode clearly shines is predictability: a credit-backed 99.99% compute SLA and longstanding reliability reputation. For CPU- or latency-sensitive production workloads, the newer Premium instances (pinned to modern AMD EPYC chips with higher consistency guarantees, from ~$43/mo) and Dedicated CPU (from $36/mo) are the better buys than the Shared tier.

In a three-way comparison, Linode's edge is transparent networking and Akamai's global backbone; DigitalOcean counters with a friendlier app platform and strong community tutorials; Vultr is often the cheapest on intro promos and offers competitive performance with chat support. All three are unmanaged developer clouds — your choice largely comes down to region coverage, API/automation preferences and the weight you give to low egress overage.
Who is Linode best for?
- Developers and indie hackers: If you can manage a Linux server, Linode gives you predictable pricing and excellent docs to run side projects, APIs or SaaS backends without surprise bills.
- Agencies running client workloads: Multi-region VPS, managed Kubernetes (LKE), managed databases and low bandwidth overage make Linode a cost-predictable home for client staging and production setups with team management and API automation.
- Bandwidth-heavy services: Generous included transfer pooled account-wide plus $0.005/GB overage means media, file-serving or sync-heavy workloads won't be punished with runaway egress bills.
- SaaS founders who value transparency: The flat $5–$96 monthly ladder with no intro/renewal trickery is easy to model into unit economics and price into a product.
- Teams already on Akamai or needing edge adjacency: The 2022 acquisition means Linode compute sits close to Akamai's CDN/WAF edge services — attractive for latency-sensitive or DDoS-conscious deployments.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Absolute beginners: No cPanel, no website-builder hand-holding, no managed WordPress — a Linode VPS assumes you can configure and secure Linux yourself. Beginners are better served by Hostinger or SiteGround.
- Managed-WordPress or WooCommerce owners: For turnkey staging, CDN, caching and managed updates, Kinsta, WP Engine or Cloudways are the better fit even though they cost more.
- EU users optimizing purely on price per core: Hetzner consistently undercuts Linode on EU hardware, though with a smaller support and SLA footprint — worth weighing if you're in Europe and don't need Akamai's global reach.
- Those needing phone-supported, chat-first help: If you want a live-chat safety net on your hosting plan, Linode's ticket/phone model (no standard live chat) may frustrate — DigitalOcean and Vultr lead there.
- Hyperscaler-bound enterprises: If you need AWS/GCP/Azure-style IAM sprawl, dozens of managed services and deep compliance portfolios, Linode's focused stack is deliberately simpler and won't match that breadth.
