Founded in 1999 by a 24-year-old Octave Klaba in Roubaix, France, and today a public company listed on the Paris SBF120 index, OVHcloud is the largest hosting and cloud provider in Europe. Its defining trait is vertical integration: rather than renting capacity from elsewhere, it designs, builds and operates its own data centers across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. That ownership underpins its core marketing promise — data sovereignty, energy efficiency, and a credible "European alternative to the American cloud giants." In this review we evaluate its shared hosting lineup and overall positioning based on third-party performance benchmarks, detailed pricing analysis including renewal behavior, customer support channels, and feature comparison, and we flag where figures come from public data and third-party testing.
OVHcloud's shared plans are genuinely competitive on the intro term. The Eco Starter gives you one site, 1GB of SSD storage, two email addresses, a free domain for the first year, unlimited free SSL, anti-DDoS protection, automatic cloud backups and unlimited traffic for $1.89/mo. That is a lot of product for the money, and for EU-based, GDPR-sensitive projects the sovereignty and own-infrastructure angle has real value. But the headline rates hide a steeper-than-average renewal jump: the Business Pro plan, for example, goes from a $2.39/mo intro to $11.79/mo at renewal — roughly a 4.9x increase — and the company has been restructuring hosting terms into 24/48-month commitments with cut-off deadlines (post-June 2026 in its 2026 plan-evolution note). As with every budget host, the intro price is a hook, not the long-term cost.
Performance and speed
When OVHcloud is up, it is fast. Independent 2025/2026 monitoring (Gizmodo, Pingdom, 2 months) measured a shared-hosting average response of ~318ms TTFB, which held at ~381ms under 500+ concurrent virtual visitors and only crept past 700ms at very heavy 1,000+ visitor load — respectable for shared. The catch is availability: that same test measured ~99.6% uptime, below the 99.9% observed-availability OVHcloud advertises, with roughly two hours of downtime across the two-month window. On our 30%-weighted Performance axis, fast loads are partly cancelled out by that sub-99.9% record, so we rate it 4.2 rather than higher. For an uptime-critical store or service, we'd lean toward hosts with verified 99.97%+ histories (like GreenGeeks, WP Engine or SiteGround on managed lines) despite their higher cost.

Hostinger is the friendlier, more beginner-focused pick with a far smoother dashboard and better standard support, and its renewal jump, while real, is smaller in percentage terms on many plans. OVHcloud counters with superior EU infrastructure ownership, stronger data-sovereignty credentials, and occasionally even lower intros. If you are confident, technical, and targeting Europe, OVHcloud is a legitimate and often cheaper choice; if you want the simplest possible "just works" experience with responsive help, Hostinger is the safer call.
Who is OVHcloud best for?
- European & GDPR-sensitive sites: For businesses in the EU, or those handling EU personal data, running on a host that owns its regional data centers and emphasizes sovereignty is a genuine compliance-and-optics advantage.
- Multi-site owners: Eco Personal (100GB, 15 sites) and the Business tiers comfortably host several websites under one plan, with easy multi-domain management.
- Developers and IT-literate users: SSH access, Git, Web Cloud Databases and diverse VPS/dedicated/cloud options give confident users a clear upgrade path their data can grow into.
- Budget intro hunters with plans to hold long-term: If you understand and accept the renewal jump, the entry bundles (free domain, SSL, backups, DDoS protection) are excellent value for money.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Absolute beginners: The Control Panel is powerful but technical, and OVHcloud does not offer the onboarding hand-holding of Hostinger or modern cPanel hosts — expect a steeper learning curve.
- Support-hungry owners: If you anticipate needing help, the slow, self-service-heavy standard tier will frustrate; fast Premium/Business/Enterprise support costs extra (~$56+/mo).
